Charles C. Tomas, 70, of 2 Arbandy Dr., died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in his home following an extended illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Lensing Funeral Service, Iowa City. Burial: Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where there will be vigil services at 6 and Moose memorial services at 7 p.m.
His family includes his wife, Ruth; daughter and her husband Linda Ann and Darrell McIntire of Iowa City; grandson, Marc Tomas McIntire of Iowa City; two sisters and their husbands, Marcella and Ralph Sovers of Solon and Gladys and Jim Christensen of Iowa City; and his mother-in-law Elma Slaymaker of Iowa City.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Linell Lee McIntire on Nov. 4, 1996; brother Frank Tomas; sister, Adeline Williams; and stepfather, Leo Rogers.
Mr. Tomas was born Sept. 17, 1927, in North Liberty, Iowa, the son of Frank and Margaret Kloos Tomas. He served in the Air Force during World War II. On Nov. 3, 1949, he married Ruth Slaymaker at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Iowa City. For many years, the couple farmed in the area. He also worked in the maintenance department at University Hospitals for 12 years and as a supervisor of maintenance for University of Iowa Dormitories for more than 16 years, retiring 11 years ago.
Charles was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Loyal Order of the Moose, all of Iowa City; Herky City Sams, Iowa Wanderers and Second Chance Sams. After his retirement, he and his wife, Ruth, enjoyed spending winters in Texas and Arizona. He was an avid camper, fisherman and bowler.
Military rites will be provided by VFW Post 3949 and assisted by other local military organizations.
Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice or Charles C. Tomas Memorial Fund.
