John Garris, 82 funeral scheduled

John Garris, 82 of 514 Seventh Street SW, Oelwein and a retired railroad car repairman, died Monday, March 5 at 2:05 p.m. at Mercy Hospital, Oelwin.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Sacred Heart church, Oelwein with Brant Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at Brant's today, Tuesday where a Scripture Servie will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Survivors include six sons; Peter of Oelwein, John of Fort Wayne, Ind., George of Chicago, Ill. Joe of Downers Grove, Ill. and Adam and George, both of Waterloo; three daughters; Mrs. Irene Winkle, Downers Grove, Ill., Mrs. Marie Hartman and Cecelia Garris, both of Oelwein; and 18 grandchildren.

Josef Gareis, born in 1737, was a German form Eger, Osterreich, and his occupation was a Mueller / Miller. He immigrated to Koehler in 8/21/1767 and married Anna Maria Wagner, and they had five children. Gareis would become the most popular name in Koehler. According to the latest data available, the 1926 household map, has Gareis with the most households at 47, the next largest was the Macht family at 38. By this time, John Gareis immigrated to the U.S. about 1911 and as you known married Maria Schmidt in 1913.

The Volga Germans were Russian, but they never mixed with the Russian people. That all changed when Germany invaded Russia during WWII. Then the Russians deported the Volga Germans to places like Siberia. Today, the village of Koehler among others no longer exists, while other Volga German Villages were able to survive.
