MARY JANE (PERSONS) PETTENGILL DEHART

Mary Jane Persons was born in May of 1849, the second of six children born to Abram & Lucy Jane (Frasier) Persons.

When Mary Jane was only 13, her father, who was serving with the 16th Michigan Infantry, died of disease and was buried in the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmens' Home National Cemetery, (formerly the Military Asylum Cemetery, D.C.)
Her older brother, William H, also died of disease while serving with the 4th Michigan Cavalry, on March 17, 1864.

In May 1868, Mary Jane Persons wed George Pettengill. Ten children were born of this union, but at the time of her death in 1923, all but 3 were deceased.

This couple was found in Flushing, Michigan, in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records. In 1910 we find them living in Colville, Washington, in the household of their son, Charles Wm. Pettengill.

George Pettengill died in Auburn, Washington, in 1915.
Mary is found as a widow in her son's home in the 1920 census in Orin Precinct, Stevens Co, Washington.

On Mar 23, 1921, Mary Jane married James A DeHart in Colville, Washington. In her marriage stats, she stated she was the daughter of Abraham Pearson and gave her mother's maiden name as Lucy Frazier.

She died at her home near Three Forks, Stevens County, Washington, on March 7, 1924. Survivors included 2 brothers - whereabouts unk (this would be George and Luke); a sister, Mrs. Charles Russell of Kalamazoo, MI; her husband, J. A. DeHart; a son C. W. Pettingill of Auburn, and two daughters, Mrs. Samuel Reed (Emma Pettengill) in Michigan and Mrs. Steve Wiles (Nettie) of Auburn (from her obituary).
