Aloysius J. Becker , affectionately known as Al and A.J. of Glen Carbon, Illinois died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. He was born May 4, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late Aloysius Dominic and Amelia (Dorr) Becker. He married Shirley Ann (Thorp) Becker in 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 10, 2007. The United States Air Force veteran proudly served his country as a gunner on a B24 in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired in 1987 from Illinois Department of Children and Family Services after many years of dedicated service in child advocacy. He had served as the East St. Louis Regional Supervisor of Field Services and was also very active with the Children Home and Aid Society of Illinois and Childcare Resource and Referral Service. Mr. Becker had served 20 years on the Village of Glen Carbon Police Commission and had a special passion in life as a master woodworker and was involved with two woodworking groups in the area. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with family and friends. Survivors: One daughter and son-in-law ... of Edwardsville; one son and daughter-in-law ... of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Louis ... of St. Louis; one sister ... of Ohio; sister-in-law ... of Kansas; other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, three brothers, Clarence, Raymond and Richard Becker, preceded him in death. In celebration of his life, a memorial mass will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Joseph Kerber as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, Ill.



Al also had volunteered for the St. Clair County [IL] Genealogical Society.

The day of birth is incorrect on his service marker, a new one will be erected with the correct day (4th).
