He was born in Holly, Michigan and at the age of two he moved with his parents to a farm in Waterford Township. He continued farming in early life, but at the age of 38 he became a blacksmith. He was a fine penman and taught writing for many years. He is described as being ingenious, industrious, and made many friends wherever he went, and his funeral at the Baptist Church was largely attended by many old friends and family. No one knows why Uncle Willie committed suicide at the age of 44.
