At age nine, Ralph tried to climb into a moving carriage and his leg was broken between the ankle and the knee. On his thirty-fifth birthday, Ralph hired musician "Blind Kelley" to play at his birthday party. Guests also danced and played cards, and enjoyed refreshments.
In Quincy, Adams county, Illinois, 26 April 1899, Ralph wed Treasa Schaffner. The wedding license states that Ralph's occupation was a "moulder." He would be 21 on his next birthday. His bride, Treasa Schaffner, was born in St Louis Missouri to Jacob Schaffner and Mary Ehler. It was the first and only marriage for both.
Ralph Hodges died in a tragic work accident. He was working as part of a city crew hired to salvage stone from the power plant to be reused in WPA and city projects, when the building collapsed. Workers tried, but were not able to reach him in time to rescue him. The doctor later determined "death had been virtually instantaneous." Ralph Hodges was buried at Greenmount cemetery in Quincy, Illinois.
