Ben Lowe was a cattleman and sometime cattle rustler in western Colorado. During the conflict between cattle and sheep concerns on the Western Slope, Lowe was implicated in killing hundreds of sheep in an effort to get the sheep men to remove their flocks from the cattle range. He became involved in a dispute with Cash Sampson, a former lawman and brand inspector who investigated the sheep killings. The two men killed each other in a gunfight in Escalante Canyon between Delta and Grand Junction. Lowe left behind a widow and five children. Lowe and Sampson are both buried in the Delta Cemetery a short distance from each other. See also the entry for Cassius Sampson.
