John Engelmann, 91, of Miller passed away, Friday, September 3, 2010 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at St. Lawrence Community Church with Pastor Beth Kelsey officiating. Burial followed in the G.A.R. Cemetery at Miller. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2010 followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Reck Funeral Home in Miller.

John was born November 14, 1918 to John and Tena (Gortmaker) Engelmann on the family farm in Hand County, South Dakota. He lived his entire life on the family farm and in the same house that he was born in, is where he passed away.

On July 2, 1962, he was united in marriage to Betty Shepherd in Pierre, South Dakota. To this union three children were born, Tadd, Taye, and JoDee.

John was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping track of the weather and other information. He enjoyed having people stop by and visit even just to talk for a while. He also liked to keep up on the news and things that were happening.

John served on the Ohio Township board for 61 years. On July 6, 1996, the Engelmann farm was recognized as a South Dakota Century Farm that was settled by his parents and maintained by John.

He is survived by his son, Tadd Engelmann of Miller, SD; daughters: Taye Miller of Spokane, WA and JoDee Engelmann of Miller, SD; brothers, Paul Engelmann of Miller, SD and George Engelmann of Ree Heights, SD; four grandchildren, Justin Engelmann, Christina Engelmann, Nicole and Heather Miller; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 1995; sister, Sylvia; and his parents, John and Tena.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with John's arrangements.
