Joyce L. Slater, 79, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away early Saturday, December 31, 2011, at the Yates Center Health Center.

She was born May 15, 1932, in the Owl Creek neighborhood south-east of Yates Center, the daughter of John Leo and Mary "Mae" (Meriweather) Hoag.

She worked for several local businesses including Woody's Café and Rite-Bye in Yates Center and the Wagon Wheel Café in Burlington. She later was employed as a custodian for the Yates Center schools until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yates Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Margaret Conkle; and two brothers, Jack and Don Hoag.

She leaves her daughter, Phyllis King and husband Billy, Wann, Oklahoma; three sons, Steve Slater and wife Sharon and Philip Slater, Jr. of Yates Center, and Mark Slater and wife Charlotte, Humboldt, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 2, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yates Center. Burial will follow in Owl Creek Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.

Memorial contributions are suggested to "Friends for Life" and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
