John J. Nusse, age 92, passed away gently on Sunday morning, January 1, 2012, at St. Joseph Gunderson Lutheran hospital in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. John was born on May 30, 1919, on the home farm in Norton County, Kansas. John's parents, Joseph and Margaret Nusse farmed 320 acres in northwest Kansas along with their 11 children. Following the death of his father in 1925 John lived with his mother and the younger siblings in the nearby town of New Amelo.
John's early years were challenged by the onset of The Depression and the Dust Bowl years in Western Kansas. He left school after 9th grade to live and work on the farms of his older sisters and brother in laws, and followed work wherever he found it. These travels took him to California, where an older sister lived, then to Denver Colorado, where he began work at a small chain of restaurants, eventually working into managing several of the establishments. John Married Essie Upjohn on June 1st, 1938. They resided in Denver, CO until John joined the United States Marine Corp during World War II, serving in the South Pacific.
John returned home in the spring of 1946, and using brother in law Arnold's harvesting equipment, led a crew on the wheat run for two consecutive years. With this financial base, John and Essie moved back to Denver, where he trained as a carpenter and began his own construction company. John participated in the great post war building surge and quickly established a reputation for quality and technical precision on both residential and industrial construction projects.
John and Essie raised three boys--—all born ten years apart. Rod, Tim and Joe followed John into the building trades and all worked together for him until drawn to their own dreams. John remained in Denver until 2001, participating in many civic, community and church activities, including the VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, and youth basketball coaching, to name but a few. John took particular delight in singing in various church choirs—an activity he began in the early 1960's and continued until shortly before his death. John guided many young people in both their tradecraft as well as their development of work ethic and values. He was well known for his integrity and honesty, and most of his projects commenced with only a handshake to mark the deal.
John and Essie moved to Wisconsin in 2001 to join family who assisted with Essie's care when she was consumed by Alzheimer's, finally succumbing in 2002. John is survived by his son Rod of Golden, Colorado, Daughter (in law) Liane of Kalkaska, Michigan, son Tim (Sharon) Nusse of Valemount, British Columbia, Son Joe (Anne) of Hillsboro, Wisconsin, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, and his special friend Carmen Haugh. John was preceded in death by all of his siblings.
Funeral services will be held at St. Aloysius Church in Hillsboro on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 11:00 with Father Don Bauer officiating. Internment to follow at St. Theresa's Cemetery in Union Center. Visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral Home in Wonewoc on Sunday afternoon January 8, 2012, from 3:00PM until 5:00 PM, with a concluding rosary by the Knights of Columbus.
