Son of Patrick Black and Emily Bridges. Buried in unmarked grave next to Mary "Polly" Edmonds Black [his second wife] per my father Wilfred F Black.
Civil War Vet Co H 29th NC inf, CSA listed as Montravale Black. Married 1. Susan - Suzannah -Susanna Edmonds and second to her sister, Mary (Polly) Edmonds. Death certificate says he died of the "flu" and this was during the flu pandemic in NC at that time and it states he is buried in Clarks Chapel Cemetery.

in June 2017 Discovered his middle name of Weaver in the 1957 wedding book of his great grandson William Maurice Black who married Mary Ruth Green. William was grandson of C.P. Black and son of William Mont Black

Montreville historically meant "small mountain or hill" in the French language and was a commonly used name in the Chickasaw Nation in the 1800.

6 children with Susanna and 2 with Polly (Lucius Landon (1868 - out of wedlock while still married to Susanna) and Thomasina Cynthia 1876). Mont, Susanna and Polly all lived together even before Susanna's death

Children with Susan / Suzannah
1. Mary C (called Molly) 9/10/1855 - 11/12/1918 never married and lived most of her later life with her brother Cornelius Pitzer Black and his wife Mary Elizabeth Garrison and helped raise their 16 children.

2. Marshal (Marsh) George Black b. Dec 1857 married Mary Josephine Gentry. They did not have any children. He died in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County NC September 12, 1922 per his NC Death Certificate which listed his cause of death as septic gangrene.

3. Joseph Woodfin Black b. 1858 d. 1886 married Irene Lucinda Buckner and had 2 children. Shortly after Joseph died of an apparent heart attack or stroke in the living room of his in-laws, Irene also died and the 2 children were adopted and raised by Cornelius Pitzer (CP) Black and his wife - Mary Elizabeth Garrison Black

4. Cornelius Pitzer Black.. CP Black 2/15/1860 - 10/25/1936 married Mary Elizabeth Garrison daughter of William J. Mitch Garrison (May 5, 1829-Aug 7, 1915) and Myra (Miriah) Ann [sometimes shown as Elizabeth Elmira Ann] Roberts (May 24, 1834-August 3, 1907). Her parents are both are buried in Jupiter Cemetery in Weaverville NC

5. Laura Black b. 1861 married Ben Revis.

6. Wiley P. Black, called Wild Black b. Feb 1866, ... known as "Wild Black" per William Maurice Black age 88 in December 2013.

Per Wilfred F Black (died 2007 and William Black age 88 December 2013 who both told these stories on many occasions) In the early 1900's "Wild stayed in trouble alot in the Asheville area" and was given choice of "stay in NC and go to jail or go to TN by an Asheville Judge." So Wild moved to Knoxville.

Wild was a bootlegger and owned bars on the Lexington Ave area of Asheville. Polly Edmonds (second wife of Montreville Black- and Wiley's Aunt) used to dance on the tables in his bar and was called "Polly Pop." There are apparently several newspaper accounts of Wiley's brushes with the law from the Asheville Citizen Times paper at that time. Wiley married Sophronia Elkins in 1888.

Montreville had 2 children with Mary "Polly" Edmonds, his second wife and the sister of Susanna, his first wife. They were

7. Lucius Landon Black; (married "Wild Blacks" wife's sister- Lou Elkins) The year of birth for Lucius Landon seems to be in question and there are many family stories from both Wilfred F Black and William Maurice Black that Lucius Landon was born to Mary [Polly Edmonds Black] well before her sister Susanna Edmonds Black died in 1870. Lucius's headstone lists his birth date as 1868, while his death certificate lists it as 1871. He was listed on the 1870 census as living with Mary [Polly] Edmunds and listed as age 2. "In the Buncombe Births book 1858-1888 in the Buncombe Co Library in Asheville; this researcher found these notes:

Edmonds, Miss Polly page 210 (7/10/1868) Labor natural, child a boy."

This would seem to confirm that Mary (Polly) Edmonds was the mother of Lucius Landon Black (father Mont Black) and his mother was not her sister Susanna who was alive and married at the time to Mont Black.

8. Thomasina Cynthia Black Calloway

Mont Black died in the home of his son Marsh (Marshal) Black close to the junction of Barnardsville Highway and Gentry Branch Road per William Black December 2013.

My Uncle Bill (William Maurice) Black (Great grandson of Mont, Grandson of CP Black, son of William Mont Black) told me in 2013 that he had always heard that the Grandchildren (children of CP and Mary Elizabeth Garrison Black) were not allowed to pull Mont's beard or they would get slapped while Mitch Garrison (Mary Elizabeth's dad ) allowed them to pull his beard all they wanted.
