Ellen met Charlotte in January 1831 at Roe Head School, and the two remained close friends. She often visited Charlotte's family and became a friend to Charlotte's sisters, Emily and Anne. When Anne fell ill, Charlotte and Ellen accompanied her to Scarborough, where Ellen remained a constant companion and comfort to Charlotte as she watched her sister pass away. Ellen was also a witness at Charlotte's wedding. After the death of Charlotte, Ellen devoted her life to her friend's memory. Ellen passed away in 1897 at the age of 80.
