Known for being a lifelong friend of author Charlotte Brontë, Ellen was the twelfth child of John and Ellen Nussey. Ellen met Charlotte in January 1831 at Roe Head School, and the two remained close friends. She often visited Charlotte's family and became a friend to Charlotte's sisters, Emily and Anne. When Anne fell ill, Charlotte and Ellen accompanied her to Scarborough, where Ellen remained a constant companion and comfort to Charlotte as she watched her sister pass away. Ellen was also a witness at Charlotte's wedding. After the death of Charlotte, Ellen devoted her life to her friend's memory. Ellen passed away in 1897 at the age of 80.
