American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of England, he was issued the award on June 23, 1896, for his actions as a private with Company D, 55th Ohio Infantry, US Army, on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the US Army in September 1861, and on July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg, he voluntarily took a position on the skirmish line further towards the Confederates to help find snipers that were attacking the artillery on Cemetery Hill. He remained out front even after the skirmishers were called back in. He was captured and remained a prisoner of war until May 1864. The following October, he was discharged and retuned to Ohio where he died at the age of 81. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Voluntarily took an advanced position on the skirmish line for the purpose of ascertaining the location of Confederate sharpshooters and under heavy fire held the position thus taken until the company of which he was a member went back to the main line."
