Dr. C. Duane Hensley of Lee's Summit MO passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, at North Kansas City Hospital. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held July 6th, 5:30-8 pm at the C. Duane Hensley Administration Building, Jackson County Board of Services, 8508 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Thursday, July 7th at the Kent Funeral Home, Milan, MO. Funeral Services will be 1 pm Friday July 8th, at the First Baptist Church, Milan, MO. To continue his lifetime commitment to the developmentally disabled and youth sports the family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to: The Dr. C. Duane Hensley Memorial Fund, United Missouri Bank, PO Box 100, Milan, MO 63556 or any UMB Bank.

Duane was born September 18, 1937, in Quincy, IL to "CT" and Gladys Hensley. He earned an AA Degree at Southwest Baptist College, a BS degree from Southeast Missouri State University, an MA degree from Northeast Missouri State University and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Duane was a high school teacher in Chillicothe, MO, and also served as a guidance counselor. He was involved in television talk shows, had poetry and articles in monthly and weekly publications. He later went to work at the Missouri Department of Education in Jefferson City. In 1971 he began a lifetime of work in the field of mental health. In 1976 he was appointed as the Director of the Department of Mental Health for the State of Missouri. He later served as a member of the White House Conference on Children and Youth. He also served on the Governor's Interagency Task Force on Health, Mental Health, Education and Welfare, and The Governor's Special Child Advocacy Committee and the National Institute of Mental Health Advisory Committee. From 1979 to 2003 he served as Executive Director for The Jackson County Board of Services in Kansas City, MO. He served in various capacities throughout the state of Missouri working for the improvement of the lives of the developmentally disabled.

He was a member of the Milan Elks Lodge. He was a little league baseball and Pop Warner football coach in Lee's Summit and served as a board member of the Lee's Summit Baseball Association. He was an avid supporter of his kids and grandkids, attending almost every soccer, tee-ball, baseball and football game that they were involved in.

He was preceded in death by his father, "CT " Hensley. He is survived by his mother, Gladys Hensley, his brother Bruce (spouse Melissa), sons Andrew and Alec Hensley of Milan MO. He leaves his loving wife of 50 years, Edith Hensley of Lee's Summit; two daughters, Denita Hawley of Jefferson City, Tammie (spouse Russ Foster) of Milan, MO and two sons, Marty (spouse Julie) of Kansas City, and Tim (spouse Amy) of Lee's Summit, MO. Duane is also survived by eight grandchildren.
