Lena was married twice, first to Herschel Bassett (with whom she had two sons, Fred and Eugene) and then to George Earl, Jr. She divorced Herschel, and was widowed with George. My father-in-law, Darwin DeLand, told us that "Aunt Lena was a very strong woman". She owned her own store at one point, and there are pictures of her there. Lena was born in DeWitt County, Illinois, where several DeLand relatives had come from Vermont around the time of the Civil War. Eventually her family is found in Clinton County, Missouri, but towards the end of her life, she is living in Malta, DeKalb County, Illinois. Lena's father, DeLamer L. DeLand Sr., was a captain in the Union Army during the Civil War, serving nearly four years and fighting at Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga and was part of the march on Atlanta.
