Born to Charles Godfrey Brenay and Ida Mae (Gooley) Brenay. Married Wesley Harry Dickinson on Feb 17, 1940 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan. Paternal grandparents were Wilhelm Karl Brunne and Johanna Dorothea (Weller) Brunne. Maternal grandparents were John Peter Gooley Sr. and Mary Ann (Dennis) Gooley.

She had 10 siblings: Lillie, James Elmer, Charles "Albert", William Arthur "Art", Pearl Mae, Mable Agnes, Norman George Earl, Nina Violet "Gertrude", Benjamin Edward Harrison "Ted", and Lloyd Robert.

Eight of Laura and Wesley's children were born in Michigan. They lost their oldest son, Charles Wesley, when he was 5 years old when he was run over by a truck four days after Laura gave birth to her 5th child, William (Bill). In 1953, Laura became severely disabled from asthma and her doctor advised her to move to the desert of Arizona. Therefore Wesley and Laura packed their 7 children into their 1948 Ford "woody" station wagon and, pulling a trailer behind them, set off for the West arriving in Globe, Arizona in June. In July their 9th child was born.
