JACK MCMILLAN

Longtime Midland resident Jack McMillan passed away late Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at the age of 91. Jack was born in Carthage, Mississippi on September 3, 1920, to Murray Andrew McMillan and Margaret Ingram McMillan. Jack began his multi-faceted career as a 'postage applicator' for Houston Oil Company of Spindletop fame. During the late 30s, he traveled between seven fields in South Texas as a materials handler and warehouseman. His living quarters ranged from a resort house with servants to an abandoned pipeline station barracks with large rats for roommates.

Jack served his country during WW II from 1941 to 1945. He saw action in the Pacific Theater aboard the Coast Guard Cutter, the SS Van Buren.

After the war, Jack returned to Houston Oil Company. From 1945 to 1950, he worked in the Production Department in gas measurement, and then the Exploration Department as an Oil Scout and Permit Man for seismic crews in South Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. In 1950, he was promoted to Landman and sent to Lafayette, Louisiana, to open a land office. While in Lafayette, he acquired one of the first leases executed by Judge Pugh with his famous Pugh Clause. In 1951, he was transferred to San Antonio as District Landman. Thereafter, he was transferred to Shreveport, Louisiana, and then on to Bismarck, North Dakota. In 1958, Jack was transferred to Midland, where he worked for 27 years, retiring August 1, 1985 from ARCO Exploration. He set an example that a man's word is his bond, of tough but fair recognition, and respect for competitors and landowners. His example also encouraged straightforward and accurate communication with landowners and business contacts. At his retirement, he was Province Landman. His career, spanning 48 years, was longer than any other employee at that time. In 2001, Jack was honored by the AAPL with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jack loved his family, enjoying 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He loved sports, especially baseball, golf, and Longhorn and Red Raider athletics.

Jack was predeceased by his mother and father, and by his brothers, Thurman McMillan of Houston, Leon McMillan of Midland, Herbert McMillan of Abilene, Joe McMillan of Houston, and sister Hester Mathews of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Patricia, children Diana Nicholson and her husband Randy of Austin and their children Ryan Nicholson and his wife Taylor, Matthew Nicholson and his wife Lisa, and Stacey Arguson and her husband E.J. Arguson; Steve McMillan of Richardson and his daughter Jennifer; Mike McMillan and his wife, Lynne of San Antonio and their sons Drew, and Robb; Katie Hubbard and her husband Craig of Midland and their children Christopher, Patrick, and Katharine; Bill McMillan of Marble Falls and his daughter, Kimberly; and David McMillan of San Antonio and his daughter Adrianna; as well as by his 2 great grandchildren Hoyt Nicholson and Tanner Nicholson.

A Rosary in Jack's honor will be said at 7 o'clock p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland, Texas.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 3 o'clock p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland, Texas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack's six grandsons, Ryan and Matthew Nicholson of Dallas, Drew and Robb McMillan of San Antonio, and Christopher and Patrick Hubbard of Midland.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church Building Fund, Community and Senior Services of Midland, Texas, The Petroleum Museum of Midland, Texas or to the charity of one's choice.
