STEPHEN HAWKINS

Born: December 11, 1760 in town of Derby, Conn.
Died: April 18, 1846 in town of Henderson, N.Y.
Married: April 14, 1784 at Kinderhook, N. Y., MARY LAWRENCE
Born: December 1762 (about)
Died: Living 1848 in town of Henderson, Jefferson Co. N.Y.

Service: Stephen Hawkins enlisted in April 1776 at Neskanna [Niskayuna?], about ten miles from Albany, N.Y., in the now county of Washington [?]. Was a private in Capt. Adial Sherwood's Co., called the New Levy in summer of 1780. A few days before the expiration of his term of enlistment of six months, Stephen Hawkins, with his company, was taken prisoner at Fort Ann by a corps under Maj. Carlton, conveyed to Montreal and kept in confinement for one year. They were then taken to Prison Island and confined, part of the time in irons, for another year. Were then taken to Boston and set free, having been exchanged at Montreal.
Veterans Administration, Washington, D. C., W.C. 19700

Remarks: There is no trace of the family of Stephen Hawkins, but the post office address of Mary Hawkins' pension was Henderson, N.Y. So many of the headstones of our pioneers have disappeared and theirs may have suffered the same fate.

Note: The 1840 Census of Pensioners, published Washington, D.C., 1841,lists Stephen Hawkins, age 82, Town of Henderson, Jefferson. Co., N.Y.
