Wakefield Man dies after a Furnace Starts Fire
3/13/1996 Salina Journal

An 82-year-old man died when a basement furnace started a fire at his house in this southeastern Clay County town.
Ole Turnbull was found minutes after Wakefield firefighters-arrived at his house about 9:30 a.m. Monday. His body was
found in a doorway to a bedroom.
Wakefield Police Chief James Albright said an autopsy confirmed Turnbull died of smoke inhalation. He lived alone and was the only one in the house at the time, Albright said.
Turnbull had apparently run errands Monday morning and returned home just before the fire was reported. Firefighters didn't know he was home when they arrived, but within minutes, a witness said he was probably in the house.
"He was seen at a business approximately 20 minutes prior to the fire being reported, and he said he was going to be heading home," Albright said.
An inspector from the State Fire Marshal's Office was at the scene Monday afternoon to survey the damage at the two-story house.
"It appears it started in the basement at a furnace and it just spread up through the floor and through the upstairs," Albright said.
"There was extensive fire damage. There's parts of it that's not quite as bad as the other parts, but it's real extensive."
The fire spread quickly.
Volunteer firefighters were at the house for more than two hours. Wakefield, a town of about 900, hasn't had a fire related death in years.
