Harriet Winslow died at age 16 in a traffic accident while on the way home from the school prom at St. Alban’s School with her date, Charles L. Goodrich, age 16. She was a student at the Friends’ School and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Winslow of 15 East Lenox Street in Chevy Chase. Her father was a director of the Union Market Development Corp. Goodrich was a junior at St. Alban’s and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Goodrich of 4344 Forest Lane Northwest. His father was a former member of the United States Board of Tax Appeals. Goodrich was driving east on Farragut Street Northwest at 1:16AM on the morning of February 15, 1947 when his car collided with a Capital Transit Co. bus at Thirteenth Street Northwest which witnesses reported was traveling at a high speed. Goodrich was thrown outside the vehicle onto the street, but his date was trapped inside the vehicle. An Emergency Hospital took her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2:30AM. Goodrich was taken to the same hospital in a Health Department ambulance where his condition was listed as serious. The bus had no passengers and was headed back to the Northern Division Garage at Fourteenth and Decatur Streets Northwest after ending its scheduled route. Goodrich had stopped at the stop sign at Farragut Street and was slowly driving into the intersection. After the accident the bus broke the sidewalk in front of the residence of Miss Laura C. Bright of 4917 Thirteenth; tore up the lawn of Reginald Morgan at 4915 Thirteenth; demolished the front porch and broke a front window at the residence of Miss Katherine A. Nau at 4913 Thirteenth and caused slight damage to the porch of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Nelson at 4911 Thirteenth.
