Reverend Mother Gertrude Bodkin RSCJ., was born in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, on July 26, 1875, to Dominick George Bodkin and Marian O'Kelly. She entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in Roehampton, England, in 1894, and came to the United States in 1909 as mistress of novices at Kenwood, Albany (at that time the noviceship for the United States). For the next 64 years she served tirelessly as Mother General and Mistress of Studies at the boarding schools in Brighton and Wandsworth, and as Superior at Blackheath, Aberdeen and St. Julian's Malta from 1902 till 1909, when she was sent to New York as Mistress of Novices and Mistress of Choir at Kenwood, posts she held until 1932 when she was made Superior. From 1935 until 1945, she was Superior at Manhattanville University College and Albany-Kenwood boarding school, then served as Superior Vicar of the U.S. Province, based primarily in Greenwich, Connecticut, from 1945 till 1955. She died in Albany.


Responsible for molding hundreds of young religious of the Sacred Heart, who held her in high regard as a holy woman with much intellect and integrity, a published biography of hers, written by Margaret Williams RSCJ., is kept in the US RSCJ Provincial Archives.
