Thomas Barton Stone was born in Montgomery County, AL and was the son of Warren Thomas Stone and his wife Sarah E. Norman. He moved to Texas with his father and step-mother in 1865 and settled in Washington County near Chappell Hill. On September 17, 1875 he married Catherine "Kitty" Elizabeth Elliott. They were the parents of eight children: Anne Holland Stone, Emma Warren Stone Pettus, Thomas Elliott Stone, John Norman Stone, Sarah Felder Stone Theis, Katherine Barrillon Stone Bogart, Warren Stone, and Barton William Stone. During his early career he was a teacher and President of Soul University in Chappell Hill. About 1881 he moved to Caldwell where be ran a drugstore with his brother Wooten Meriwether Stone. In 1893 he sold his interest in that drugstore and moved to Georgetown and opened a drugstore.
