George was born to Frank and Helen (Harris) McIlvenna. He was educated in the schools of Beresford, SD. On June 2, 1915, George married Agnes O'Connor at Emmet, SD; and, the couple farmed near Beresford. After his wife's death in 1961, George continued to farm until 1965 and then moved to Beresford, SD in 1971.
