VaLaire died peacefully at home after a short fight with lung cancer. She preceded her husband Harold.

Oregonian (location at time of her death) - "A funeral for Valaire Thornberry, a Northeast Portland resident, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bateman Carroll funeral Chapel in Gresham, Interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Thornberry died of cancer Monday in her home. she was 74. She was born Feb 17, 1919 in Brady, NE [parents Harold F and Elsie M Carter]. Her maiden name was Carter. In 1929, she moved with her family to Powell, WY, where she graduated from high school at the age of 16. she attended the University of Wyoming and married Harold W. Thornberry on Jan 28, 1939, in Red Lodge, Mt. After moving to the Portland area in 1959, Mrs. Thornberry, who was known as "Grandma," worked as a kindergarten teacher and administrator for a number of years. she helped to establish the Gateway Christian Kindergarten. Following her retirement, she lived in Lincoln City for 10 years before returning to the Portland area.

Survivors besides her husband include her sons, Harold D of Portland and Craig of Gresham; daughters, Carol Ward of billings, Mt, Jean Piteck and Christie Coiner, both of Portland and Ann Franck of Vancouver, WA; brother "Jr" Carter of WY; sisters Vivian DeVoss and June Blair both of Texas; 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Remembrances to American Cancer Society."
