Chief Jan Willemese was born in 1900, and was responsible for pushing the Soybean with Henry Ford. He was working in a hotel in Miami, Fla., and Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford tried one of his pastries and liked it very much. Ironically, the pastries that he delivered to the yacht of Edsel Ford, not once did he ever meet Edsel Ford. Edsel Ford called his father and reccommended Chef Jan. Jan started working at the Dearborn Inn, and baked for Mrs. Ford's Parties. Henry Ford use to come around and later on invited him to bake at his Engineering Lab, which had a bakeshop. Mr. Ford asked him to work on the Soybean and Jan was very interested in working with him. Jan worked on receipes with the Soybean Flour and also made Soybean Crackers for Mr. Ford. When Mr. Ford became ill, he went to work for Syscos, and in his 80's he was an Executive Chef. He retired when he was 94, and lived to be 100 years old on the diet he worked on with Mr. Ford, Soybeans. He is survived by 3 Sons and many Grandchildren. It was a great honor to know him and I am much enriched to have met him. Chief Jan wrote a book with Eleanor Eaton in 1993, called Cooking For Henry, receipes he used to cook for the Ford family.
