Eleanor first married Henry Hammond Thomas in Annapolis, Maryland on May 4, 1852. They had the following children: Samuel, Mary, H.H., Charles, William, and Elizabeth. Henry passed away in 1863. Eleanor married Mordecia K. Smith in 1868.

Eleanor was known as the daffodil lady of Gloucester County, Virginia. She grew these flower bulbs and sent them up to Baltimore and other locations.
