Royalty. The daughter of Louis IX and Marguerite de Provence was born during the sixth crusade in Jaffa. In November 1269 she was married to Ferdinando de la Cerda, eldest son of Alfonso X. She became mother to two sons and was widowed in 1275. Her brother-in-law, Sancho, forced Alfonso X to name him his heir, thus excluding her sons from succession. After being imprisoned for a short time she and her sons were able to flee from Aragon to France. Together with her mother she founded the Convent of the Poor Clares where she retired to. Although she also died there she was buried at the Franciscan church. Her tomb was damaged by a fire in 1580 but was restored afterwards. After the revolution her gisant was brought to St Denis.
