He was residing at Old Saybrook, CT when he enlisted in the Union Army on September 15, 1862. He was Mustered into Company D, 24th Connecticut Infantry on November 18, 1862. Mustered out of Federal Service on September 30, 1863 at Middletown, CT.
He was married to Mary (Holden) Beebe, daughter of Walter and Nancy (Bushnell) Holden. Mr. Beebe was a Stone Mason by trade.

"Silas F. Beebe, 72, died at his home at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning of paralysis. Mr. Beebe was born in Norwich, Conn., May 14, 1826. In 1846 he married Mary Holden, who survives him. Mr. Beebe moved to Putney in the fall of 1885, and spent the remainder of his life here. He was a veteran in the civil war and served in the 24th Connecticut Volunteers. Mr. Beebe was a kind father, a loving husband and faithful friend. He was loved and respected by all. He leaves four children, Mrs. C. A. Tefft, and Mrs. C. B. Willard of Putney, C. F. Beebe of Montana and A. S. Beebe of Minnesota. The funeral will be held at the house at 2:30 today, Friday, Rev. Mr. Bennett, officiating. The burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery."
