On February 11, 2012, at the age of 88, Joe Gieb, Jr. passed away with his children surrounding him. He now rests in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father with no pain, just joy.

Joe was born on May 8, 1923, in Lindsay, Texas, one of eight children, to Joe and Helena Friedman Gieb. He was raised in Gainesville, Texas where his family owned and operated the local grocery store.

After graduating high school, Joe attended North Texas State University to continue his education and to play football. With WWII looming, he joined the U.S. Marines in 1943 and transferred to the U.S. Navy in 1944. Joe served on a troop ship transporting soldiers and supplies in the European theatre.

He returned to California after the war ended and joined the Fleet City Blue Jackets Football Squad. He was honorably discharged and returned to North Texas State where he continued his education and passion for football. Joe was the leading rusher and scorer in 1946.

During spring training in 1947, his career ended with a major break to his leg. After graduation in 1948, he began his career in the oil and gas industry and started his family with his wife Pat. They settled in Midland and raised their three children, where he remained for 56 years. Joe was a Scout with Magnolia Oil Company and later co-founded Gieb and Whiteside with his longtime friend and partner Ray Whiteside where they stayed active trading minerals and generating deals until Ray's passing in 1981.

To say that Joe loved the game of golf would be an understatement. For years he played with friends and associates and hit countless practice balls looking for the 'one' change that would make his game better and fulfilling his desire for competition. As he grew older his passion for golf continued but with a new dynamic, couples golf, with his loving wife Treva. They traveled with friends for long weekends, tournaments and golf schools that developed friendships that lasted the rest of his life.

He was a member of Christ Church, St. Stephens Catholic Church, American Association of Petroleum Landmen. served on the Board of Directors at Midland Country Club and numerous committee's and tournament boards. After the death of his wife Pat in 1979, he met and married Treva Boyd in 1981 and began a wonderful new chapter in his life. They were together every day until her passing in 2011. Joe and Treva enjoyed life to the fullest, being with friends and watching their grandchildren participate in their activities.

Once they moved to Manor Park, they became quite social with new and old friends dropping by, birthday parties, 4th of July parades, exercise class and just sitting on the porch enjoying each other's company.

Joe was preceded in death by his mother and father, his first wife Pat Ammon Gieb in 1979, his second wife Treva Boyd Gieb in November 2011, brother Lawrence Gieb, sisters, Virginia Gieb Teague and Sister Helen Mary (Pat) Gieb. He is survived by his children, Gail Gieb Payne and her husband Robert, Janet Gieb Helm and her husband Ron, Buddy Gieb and his wife Holly.

Grandchildren Jennifer Payne Thompson and her husband Ted, Allen Payne and his wife Marisa, Alex Gieb, Leslie Gieb, Carson Ross and Sam Ross. Greatgrandchildren Trenton Thompson, Grant Payne and the new light in his eye, Audrey Anne Payne. Joe is also survived by his sisters Lucille Gieb Evans, Evelyn Gieb Schafer and Annabell Gieb Gaughan, sister-in-law Nonie Boyd Brown and her husband Bob, brother-in-law James Ken Boyd and his wife Bobbi, an abundance of nephews, nieces, greatnephews and great-nieces.

pg A special thank you to his caregivers, Amy Rios, Belinda Arguello and Patricia Villareal who brought a smile to his face every day. The family would also like to thank Midland (Memorial) Hospice for making his final hours so comforting. Also, Dr. Shylesh Ganta who was a true friend to Joe and guided him through the last few years with his wisdom and compassion.

Joe believed 'be kind to people, work hard, enjoy life and don't sweat the small stuff', and he followed his own words to the very end.

Although he will be missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that he waits for us in heaven where we will see our loved ones again.
