Ophelia (Phebe) Steele Waltrip, 99, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012, with her family by her side. She was a woman who lived life fully and loved God, family, and friends. Her life was long, prosperous, and filled with the love of those who knew her. She had a wonderful attitude and was always smiling.

Phebe was born on July 28, 1912 in Whiteagle, Oklahoma, the eighth child born to Guy Cooper and Lucy May Beckwith Steele, in a lovely 2½ story home built by her father. She went to a two room school, also built by her father and uncle, with area Ponca Indians through eighth grade. She remembered seeing the Indian campfire powwow's with drums and chanting and seeing them dance. She could also hear them from her bed at night. Phebe moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma and went to Ponca City High School for two years, gy then moved to Dallas, Texas and graduated from Sunset High in 1930. She later moved to Ft. Worth, where she met her husband while working in the same building as him. On February 4, 1933, she married Earl Clinton Waltrip in the First Christian Church in Ft. Worth. After having their four girls, they also lived in Florence, Alabama; Salina, Kansas; and Ponca City, Oklahoma before moving to Midland, Texas in 1959. They owned and operated Waltrip Music Store here in Midland, where she and her daughter Carmen continued to operate it until they retired on August 31, 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, four sisters, her husband, Earl in September 1993, and two daughters, Sandra Sue Waltrip Ormrod in 1994 and Carmen JoAn Waltrip in 2008.

Phebe was a long and faithful member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class for many years until it dissolved and currently was in the Keystone Sunday School class. Phebe also attended the church's Fit and Fun group meeting on Thursdays since 1985 until they stopped meeting in 2010. Phebe was one of the early members that included husbands too. She leaves behind many caring friends and church family from St. Luke's. She loved crocheting, reading books, working puzzles, playing cards and domino games, but most of all 'Gramma/GG' loved her family. Many of her family and friends have afghans she made.

Phebe is survived by her daughters, Nita Harris and husband, Charlie, and Rita Speer all of Midland. Also survived by grandchildren Charlie Harris and wife, Margaret of Plymouth, MI; Kimberly Speer-Warner and husband, Glenn of Denton, Texas; Caren Harris of Midland; Stacee Speer-Burns and husband, Dennis of Midland; Tom Ormrod of Corpus Christi, Texas; Steven Ormrod of Austin, Texas; and Don Addington of Phoenix, Arizona; greatgrandchildren, Trace Bartley, Madison Bartley, Megan Warner, Cooper Burns, Quinn Burns, and Joanne (Jojo) Creviston; son-in-law Rod Ormrod and wife, Paula of St. Louis, Illinois; several nieces and nephews, especially Marilyn Hicks of Dallas who was more like her sister.

Phebe's family would like to thank Angela and the caring staff of Hospice of Midland and the wonderful, loving ladies and Henry of Red Rose Christian Home where Phebe lived since May 2009. Their care of her was exceptional. A special thank you to Elvia, who our Mom said 'No, YOU are the best'.

Family will welcome friends at Ellis Funeral Home on Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. After a private graveside service a memorial service will take place on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2:00pm at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Sr. Pastor Kathryn Boren officiating. Honorary pallbearers are sons-in-law Charlie L. Harris and Rod Ormrod; grandchildren, Charlie E. Harris, Kimberly Speer-Warner, Caren Harris, Tom Ormrod, Stacee Burns, and Steven Ormrod.
