Mr. Papez was born in Albion, Nebraska on July 10, 1918. While in high school he won numerous sports medals and ribbons in football, baseball and track. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member and past master of the Masonic Lodge in Albion. For many years he was the manager of the shoe department at J.C. Penny in Santa Fe. After his retirement from the store, he worked part-time at the Santa Fe Downs at the Jockey Club and in ticket sales. He married Lucille Sanchez in Santa Fe in the summer of 1972. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Kenny Kloth of Sandy, Utah; a step-daughter, Patricia Romero of Santa Fe; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Tillie Sanchez of Palm Springs, California; two grandchildren: Marni Paladino of Morgan Hill, California and Billy Shalz, Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah; a great-grandchild, Olivia Shalz.
A rosary for Mr. Papez will be said Thursdayat 7 p.m. at St. Helen Catholic Church and Mass of Resurection will be held Friday at 11:15 a.m. at St. Helen with Father Anthony Matinez officiating. Burial will be in the Portals Cemetery.
