In 1946, he moved to Syracuse, NY, where he became an Associate Professor and then a Professor at the School of Journalism, which has since become the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, at Syracuse University. For 22 years he was Chair of the Magazine Department. He served as President of the Association for Education in Journalism (which has since become the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications), in 1948-49 and received an honorary doctorate from Albright College in Reading, PA, in 1955. He retired from teaching in 1972 but continued writing.
Among his many accomplishments, he was a pioneer in the study of the African-American press, wrote or co-authored more than 20 books and nearly 1,000 magazine articles, and was for 65 years the book review editor of Quill and Scroll magazine. He took pride in lengthy correspondence with many of his former students around the world.
His first wife was Bernice Browne Wolseley (1901-1980). His second wife, Isabel, survived him.
