Felix, who grew up in Haiti but of French descent, arrived in Philadelphia after fleeing the rebellion in Saint Domingae. His father, Francis Adrian and brothers, Frederick and Francis, were jewellers known for their silver pieces and pearls. They were the only French jewellers that stayed in business over three generations. Their store front was near Independence Hall placing them in an era and site where they probably rubbed shoulders with well known people in Philadelphia. Their pieces can be seen in the Philadelphia Art Museum. In 1816, Felix became an American citizen.
