Alma Bertschin was a civilian during World War II. Alma was captured by Imperial Japan while living in China, and was sent to Kiawgwan Camp near Shanghai, China where 1,599 other American POWs were held. Alma's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on February 14, 1942, and the last report was made on April 26, 1946. Based on these two reports, Alma was imprisoned for at least 1,532 days (4 years and ~4 months), one of the longest durations of captivity recorded. Ultimately, Alma was returned to military control, liberated or repatriated.
