The only son of Boyd R. and Ladelle (Allen) Bonner was born on his parents' first anniversary. He was distanced from his father at an early age, living for some years in Monticello, AR with his maternal grandmother in the infamous Allen House.

Allen studied journalism at Arkansas A & M College in Monticello, later transferring to Baylor University. In 1936 he was appointed the managing editor of the university newspaper.

Moving to NY about 1941, Allen was chosen to edit the radio division of the Associated Press. He became ill in early 1944, and died of pneumonia in New York City's Gotham Hospital Jan. 23rd of that year. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Monticello, AR on Jan. 28th.

Interestingly, a common monument was erected for Boyd R. Bonner and his son Elliott Allen Bonner in Springhill Cemetery, Decatur Co., IN, where Boyd's family is buried.
