Joseph was a Lt. Col. in the Union Army during the Civil War in the 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He was captured in Dr. Upton's Cellar in downtown Madisonville (later Beirley Funeral Home) by Confederate Troops. He was marched to McMinn County in the Goodsprings Community where he was either beaten or shot to death on 1/28/1865. His body was left buried in a field until his family retrived the body about a year later to be buried in Big Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Tennessee.
