New Zealand Land Wars Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a unit Drummer in the 57th Regiment of Foot, Middlesex Regiment. In actions at Pontoko, New Zealand, October 2, 1863, Drummer Stagpoole volunteered to go with an officer to rescue a wounded comrade from the Maori resistance. They succeeded in bringing in the wounded man through 50 yards of bush, under heavy enemy fire at short range. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in January, 1866.
