Jean grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and attended Stephens College and Northwestern University. She traveled to Memphis to visit her college roommate and met the love of her life, M. A. Lightman. Within a year they were married and spent the next 55 years together in Memphis raising their family and enjoying the things they loved the most; playing golf, tennis, bridge and especially fishing.
Jean's mother was a concert violinist who left her with a lasting love of the arts. She loved symphonies and broadway shows and traveled often to New York to see the latest productions. Jean and M. A. loved to dance to big band music and were seen at parties moving gracefully across the dance floor, often until the band packed up.
She was a past member of the Woman's Exchange, Symphony League of Memphis, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.
She was also a member of Temple Israel, the Temple Israel Sisterhood and a member of the Council of Jewish Women as well as the Variety Club of Memphis.
She served as a Gray Lady at the veteran's hospital and worked with tutoring the elderly and children.
Jean was a lovely person, beautiful inside and out, always willing to comfort and assist those in need.
She was known to her family and friends as Mimi and will be forever loved and missed by them.
The family would like to thank the loving staff at Crossroads Hospice, especially her nurses, Barbara Miller and Susan Johnson, as well as her very devoted caregivers, Barbara James, Marie Jones and Charstine Massengale.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1-3 p.m. at Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, memorials should go to the Church Health Center, Memphis Food Bank, or the charity of donors choice.
