Another pioneer of this county, Wm P Pack, of this, Mound township, laid down the burdens of this life and joined the silent host on the other side. His death occurred at his home north of this city Jan 30th, 1906, at 4 pm.
Although apparently a robust type of manhood, he had been suffering for over a year but did not consider the ailment serious until a few months ago, since when he sought the best medical aid but without avail. The second week in January he was stricken with sclerosis of the liver, resulting in death. He suffered much pain the last two days of his illness, but was conscious almost to the last. His last request was that the old settlers and neighbors take charge of his obsequies, which was observed.
The funeral service, held in the M E church in this city Thursday, Feb 1, 1906, was conducted by that able and eloquent minister Rev H Guy of Winfield, Kas, a friend of the deceased and former minister of the Christian Church in this city. Rev Wm Galle of this city delivered a short sermon in German for the benefit of the German friends of the departed.
The funeral was one of the most largely attended of any ever held in this part of the county - the attendance being estimated at nearly seven hundred - his old time friends and neighbors from the remote parts of McPherson and Harvey counties attending.
William P Pack was born in Monroe Co, W Va, July 27, 1845. At the age of 23 years he migrated to Woodson county, Kans. Feb 3 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Susan J Johnson in Woodson county. July 27, 1872, the family located on the present homestead, where he resided ever since. Notwithstanding the hardships attending the settlement of a new country his undaunted management resulted in success which few men obtain under like circumstances. He was one of the most successful farmers and stockmen of this section, and leaves a large land estate and other property as a result of a progressive life.
He was a charter member of Moundridge Lodge No 302, A O U W, which was instituted May 14, 1890, and was always found "in good standing." The resident members attended the last rites in a body.
Deceased in all his residence in this community was highly esteemed and respected as a worthy man, and honorable in his relations as a citizen - which all the old settlers verify. And as a further evidence of the high esteem in which he was held, our towns people during the obsequies closed every place of business, including the mill, elevators and banks, and the public schools were also dismissed out of respect. He will be sadly missed and his death sincerely regretted.
A wife, three sons, Fred, Claud and Birt, three daughters, Mrs M Schroff, Mrs Paul Scott and Miss Nettie Pack, four brothers, James of Hunter, Okla, Jefferson D, of Wichita, Kans, Robt L of the state of Washington, John H of Idaho; three sisters, Mrs Josie Brown and Mrs Rebecca Smith of W Va, and Mrs Belle Phipps of Oklahoma, survive him. All of whom were present except the brothers in Washington and Idaho and sisters in West Virginia and Oklahoma.
The Journal in common with the people of this community extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
