Revel's father died in 1778 and his mother shortly thereafter since by August 1779, Revel and his siblings were orphans in care of a guardian. In 1780, when he was sixteen years old, he volunteered to go to the war, as a substitute for a man who had been drafted. He served in Captain William Polk's company and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

After marrying Capt. Polk's daughter, Margaret, in 1785, the family moved to North Carolina sometime around 1789 and then to Henry County, Indiana in 1827. There, Revel taught elementary school in a log schoolhouse on the western limits of New Castle, IN.
