Pioneer and Patriarch of the Astill family in Roseville. Zachariah Astill and his wife had immigrated from England, lived three years in St. Louis, MO, and then trekked west on the Great Overland route to California. They arrived in Roseville in 1852 where they took up some federal land grants. Zachariah Astill was a farmer throughout his life, and had the distinction of having his ox teams and horses being employed to help build the Central Pacific railroad. He and his wife had a large family, including a son James who continued his father's farming legacy after Zachariah died in 1874 at the age of 61.
