Poet. Theodosia Trollope (née Garrow) was the daughter of Theodosia Garrow (née Abrams Fisher) and Joseph Garrow. She first published her first poem, "The Gazelles and On Presenting a Young Invalid with a Bunch of Early Violets" in 1839 and subsequently published many articles in Charles Dickens's weekly magazine Household Words. Her publications quickly brought her fame, and her poetry was highly praised by the poet Walter Savage Landor. In addition, her poetry was frequently compared to the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In 1841, she published a poem called "Song of the Winter Spirits". In 1842, she published another poem called "On a Portrait of Her Majesty". Through Dickens, she was introduced to the writer Thomas Adolphus Trollope whom she would later marry. In 1844, she took a trip to Florence with the Trollope family and married Thomas Trollope four years later. Following her marriage, she had a daughter Beatrice Trollope who was born in 1853. Using her inheritance money, she bought a luxurious villa in Florence, which made her one of the most prominent literary hostesses in Italy. Her home was frequently visited by notable members of society, including the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who also established a residence in Florence. During this time, she continued to publish articles in The Athenaeum advocating for Italian Independence. In addition, she translated plays by Giovanni Battista Niccolini and poems by Giuseppe Giusti. After a long and very successful career, Theodosia Trollope died in 1865.
