James M. Baumgarten, age 66 of Baraboo, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2012, at the St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo with his loving family at his side.James was born on Oct. 11, 1945, in Reedsburg, to Oscar and Shirley (Decker) Baumgarten. Jim was united in marriage to Linda M. Griffith on June 13, 1970, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo. Jim's most recent employment was for Bector Dickinson in Madison.
Other places of employment included Wisconsin Metals in Reedsburg, McFarlanes in Sauk City, Cenex in Baraboo, Applied Power and Baraboo Equipment and Teel Plastics of Baraboo. He also was a welder and steamfitter on various construction projects including the Baraboo Army Ammunition Plant. He and his wife Linda owned and operated the Freedom Inn of North Freedom for 11 years.
Jim joined the U.S. Naval Reserve after graduating from Reedsburg High School. He served on active duty during the Vietnam era aboard the USS Dixie and remained in the Naval Reserve for 13 years. He was an active member with a lifetime membership in the North Freedom American Legion Post 172.
He had also served as a member of the board for Freedom Township.
He was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Freedom and also had served on the church council, including the office of treasurer, and a member of the church choir. Some of "Bummer's" favorite times were spent at his lake cabin near Hayward. Fishing, observing wildlife, and spending time with his brother, friends, and family was the "good life" to Jim.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Linda, a teacher at St. Joseph School in Baraboo; his mother, Shirley M. Baumgarten of North Freedom; sisters, Shari (Ralph) Luther of Madison, and Jacki (Gary) Crawford of Baraboo; brother, Dan Baumgarten of North Freedom; nieces, Jill (Scott) Mohlman of Cottage Grove, BreeAnn and Baily Baumgarten of Baraboo; nephews, Kevin Crawford and Brady Baumgarten of Baraboo; and aunt, Mildred Palenshies of Ohio.
He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Caroline and Raymond Siberz of Baraboo; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John Griffith of Milwaukee, Rose (Gary) Douglas of West Allis, Mary Steffen (Gordon Morlan) of Reedsburg, Connie Griffith of Baraboo, Nancy (Ken) Ender of Baraboo, Jeff Griffith of Oregon, Judy Gaffney of Baraboo, Lisa (Patrick) Zimmerman of Baraboo, and Jim Griffith of Baraboo; and many special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Oscar M. Baumgarten; nephew, Jeff Luther; his fraternal and maternal grandparents; and his much loved and faithful companion boxer, Rex.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Freedom with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Redlin Funeral Home in Baraboo, and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Burial will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom, where military rites will be conducted. Memorials may be made to Baraboo SJS Cancer Support Team.
