Tennessee Mae French and her family left Virginia according to family stories in a wagon train with five children. She had three stops in her travels to Seattle. The first was in Missouri where four children were born and one died. The family was then located in Kansas when Tennessee's father's will was being probated and she had to acknowledge and agree with how the property was being distributed. The families next stop was Oklahoma where one was born and one died. The next stop was West Clear Lake in Skagit County, Washington State. Then the family moved to Seattle where they settled down.
