Churchman Dies On Plane Abroad
Geneva, Switzerland (UP) - Msgr. John Cawley, 71, of Los Angeles, died of a heart attack today aboard a plane carrying a party of Catholic prelates, including Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York home from the Vatican City consistory.
Msgr. Cawley died at 1:25 a.m (7:25 p.m. Friday) after a special plane carrying 12 prelates made an unscheduled landing at Geneva airport.
Vicar general of the Los Angeles archdiocese, Cawley was born in Sligo County, Ireland but came to Los Angeles in 1908. Twice honored by the Holy See, Pope Benedict XV conferred the title of monsignor on Cawley in 1919, and in 1935 the Vatican made him protonotary apostolic.
Left Paris.
Cardinal Spellman archbishop of New York had left the party to continue to Paris by train before Msgr. Cawley died.
The party was returning from the Rome consistory where James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, archbishop of Los Angeles, and 13 other prelates had been elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals.
Msgr. Cawley died on the special plane as it was preparing to take off for New York.
Msgr. Fidenelo Esparza of the Los Angeles archdiocese was present when Msgr. Cawley died and will remain here until Tuesday to bring the prelate's body to Los Angeles.
"The plane made an unscheduled stop," Msgr. Esparza said. "We all went to a hotel in Geneva for a little over an hour and then re-boarded the plane. Soon after that the attack came."
The heart attack was caused by an asthmatic condition which Msgr. Esparza said the Los Angeles prelate had suffered for years.
