Mrs. Christina Ellis died at 10 o'clock Thursday night of last week at her home on North Main Street She had been in failing health for some time and her death was not unexpected.
Deceased was the widow of the late Capt William Ellis who served as postmaster of this city in the Harrison administration. She was a daughter of Capt John P. and Catherine (List) Banta, early pioneers of this county who came to this state from Virginia. Captain Banta was during his lifetime one of the largest land owners in this county and one of its leading businessmen. He was at one time partner of William Needham, deceased. He was the second president of the First National Bank of this city, one of the earliest banks organized under the national banking laws. It's charter number being fifty.
Mrs. Ellis is the last of Capt. Banta's family, all the others having preceded her to the grave. She is survived by four children, one son and three daughters. Mrs. Kitty Smith who was with her mother, Mrs. Paul Monroe who is living in the Philippine Islands, Mrs. Jas G. Covert, and George Ellis both of this county .
The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late residence conducted by __ W. Tyler.
Mrs. Ellis was born March 7, 1837 in this county. She was a woman of splendid qualities and held in the highest esteem.
