Bertha "Betty" Hammes Clarkson, age 77, passed away suddenly on July 16, 2004 in Tucker, Georgia. Mrs. Clarkson was a physical therapist (PT) and a member of the APTA for over 50 years. Her research in Kinesiology was well known with several of her research papers being published in professional journals. Her career began as the only PT in 3 Wisconsin counties and ended with over 20 years as Director of PT at Brook Run, formerly Georgia Retardation Center. Her profession sparked her love of travel, being invited to speak at many international conferences. She has seen the four corners of the world. She was an active member of Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church for over 20 years. Her neighbors feel she was a cornerstone of their community. Involved in the women's club, she had been president for many years, keeping them involved with community service. She was block captain and coordinator of the neighborhood watch. Often she hosted meetings for these groups. Betty was well known for her gracious hospitality and loving spirit. Often you would find someone at her holiday dinner table who otherwise would have been alone. Somehow no one ever went without a gift at Christmas, even unexpected guests. This year she would have celebrated 60 years with her Secret Pal Club. Mrs. Clarkson was a loving wife to Jim Clarkson, beloved father to Susan Conrad, Mukwonago, WI, Cathi (Doug) Durham of Lilburn, GA, Guy (Tracy) Clarkson of Buford, GA, Gary (Henrie) Clarkson of Snellville, GA; grandchildren, CJ, Cori, Katey, Sam, Jessica, and Matthew; sister, Marilyn Krause and family of Union Grove, WI; brother-in-law, Bob (Mui) Clarkson of Quartz Hill,CA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church, Dr. John R. Huggins officiating. Interment Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
