BETTENDORF, Iowa – Gladys M. “Glady” Burns, 91, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Sterling, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Bettendorf Health Care Center.

Gladys Marie Burns was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Sterling, the daughter of Richard and Alberta (Evans) Mangan. Glady was raised and educated in the Sterling schools and graduated from Sterling High School in 1936. She met Roy Burns, and married him on March 23, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1990. Glady left Sterling in 1947, for Port Byron, where she and Roy owned and operated the Port Byron Cafe until 1960. She served on the Port Byron Village Board during the 1950s and 60s and was the first woman to serve on the board.

Glady did a great deal of volunteer work and was a charter member of the Upper Rock Island County Recreation Association that was organized in 1956. URICRA sponsored a variety of sports activities for youth, including swimming and baseball. She was an American Red Cross-trained water safety instructor and taught swimming at the Moline YMCA for a short time. She began directing water front programs at YWCA Camp Archie Allen near Port Byron in 1953, where she was responsible for swimming and small watercraft instruction, including canoeing and sailing. She then directed Camp Archie Allen from 1960-1966.

Glady was named executive director of the Rock Island YWCA in 1966, and served in that capacity until her resignation in 1973, after 20 years of service. Following her retirement from the YWCA, Glady and Roy managed Camp Hauberg, north of Port Byron, beginning in about 1987. They rented motorized camper spaces, cabins, and tent camping spaces and operated the camp’s swimming pool, where she enjoyed teaching the children of former swimming students.

In 1956, she began volunteer work for the American Red Cross and received her 50-year pin in 2006. She was recognized as volunteer of the year of the Lincoln Land Chapter in Rock Falls in 1987. Glady enjoyed softball and bowling, and played softball for teams in Sterling and Port Byron. She also bowled for teams in Sterling and Port Byron. She participated in the Moline-Rock Island Woman’s Bowling Association tournament, where she was the singles and all events champion and her team won the tournament. Glady was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, Sterling.

She is survived by one daughter, Sherry (Ron) Reem of Bettendorf, Iowa; one son, Richard (Linda) Burns of Logan, Utah; four grandchildren, Scott (Lorie) Reem, Lenore (Jeff) Littig, Kenneth (Cori) Burns, and Jeffrey Burns; and five great-grandchildren, Steven, Karley, Nicole, Megan, and Cora.

Glady was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; three brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Mark Oehlert, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Sterling, officiating.
