Harvey Elmer Yates, age 85, our very dearly beloved husband, father, randfather, uncle, and friend passed away October 31, 1999 and left his struggle with bone cancer to rejoin family and loved ones in a joyous reunion on the other side of the veil.

He was born August 6, 1914 in Lake Point, Tooele County, Utah, the second youngest of seven children born to Nellie Gerrard Yates and Joseph Yates, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Edna, and three children, Carol Coleman of Bountiful; Sherrill Anderson (Darryl) of Bountiful; and Harvey Lynden Yates (Dalice) of San Pedro, California. He is also survived by his only three grandchildren, Aaron Lynn Anderson (Lauralyn), Adam Brian Anderson, and Alan Cameron Anderson (who is serving an LDS mission in Caracas, Venezuela) and the joy of his life, his one great-grandson, Alan Tyler Anderson, age 16 months.

Dad served in the United States Navy from 1934 to 1940. While in Sydney, Australia, he met Edna on a blind date and it was the beginning of a very special eternal love. Dad and Mom were married on August 12, 1938 and later solemnized on their 57th wedding anniversary August 12, 1995 in the Bountiful Temple.

Dad and Mom raised our family in the Huntington Park/South Gate area of California. He worked for the United States Steel Company for over 30 years as the head maintenance mechanic. After retirement dad and mom decided to move to Bountiful in 1980 to be near dad's family. Dad was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. Although inactive for over 50 years, Dad exemplified all the teachings of the Church through his service to others.

Thanks to his neighbors' love and kindness in the Bountiful 10th Ward, and in particular his devoted friend and home teacher, Bill Kirkham, he became an active member the last years of his life. Dad had a unique talent of understanding anything mechanical. He constantly read books and magazines on countless subjects educating himself, then devoted hours of service to others as the neighborhood "fix-it" man. He was always willing to help everyone, his family, his grandchildren, his friends and neighbors, and especially children in the neighborhood.

Dad truly lived as a Christian his entire life; his love and devotion to our dear mom and his example of love and service to others are his legacy. Dad loved everyone and everyone loved him. Thanks, dad, for being you!

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3rd at 12 noon at the Bountiful 10th Ward, 1145 North 200 East, Bountiful. Friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. and at the Church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday morning prior to the funeral. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery.
