William Birdwell was born 10 February, 1772 in James River, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was the son of George Birdwell and Mary Looney. I do not know who the parents of Mary were. They may have been the Looney family living in Sumner County Tennessee.

By 1806 William is in Jackson County, Tennessee where he signed "Petitioners for reduction of Constitutional Limits of Jackson County, Tennessee".

William Birdwell is on the 1811 tax list for Jackson County, Tennessee.

In Davidson County, Tennessee Deed Book 1, page 7, William Birdwell, on February 23, 1811, made release to Mary and George Birdwell, executors and c. of estate of George Birdwell, deceased. This will was proved in court of Montgomery County, Tennessee in 1811.

1. Page 285:The following tracts of land will be exposed to public sale on the 22nd of January next, to satisfy the direct tax. Eli. Hammond, Collector. Reputed owner, William Birdwell, 120 acres, Wells Creek.

2. Page 77: Letter at the Williamsburgh Post Office, 01 July 1810 for James or William Birdwell.

The following taken from "Tennessee Civil War Verterans Questionaires", compiled by Gustavus W. Dyer and John Trotwood Moore: William Birdwell lived with his family near Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tennessee.
